When choosing coil nails for framing, consider the following factors:
- Nail length: For framing, the most common nail lengths are between 2-3/8 inches (60mm) and 3-1/2 inches (90mm). Choose the length based on the thickness of the materials you're framing and the required penetration depth for a strong connection.
- Nail diameter: Framing nails usually have a shank diameter between 0.113 inches (2.87mm) and 0.131 inches (3.33mm). Thicker nails provide better holding power, but they may also cause wood splitting, especially in dense or dry wood.
- Nail material: Nails for framing are typically made of steel and coated to prevent rust and improve durability. Common coatings include galvanized (zinc-coated), stainless steel, and brite (uncoated). Galvanized nails are suitable for most framing projects, while stainless steel nails are recommended for outdoor or high-moisture environments.
- Nail type: There are two main types of coil nails - round head and clipped head. Round head nails have better holding power but take up more space in the nail gun magazine. Clipped head nails have a portion of the head removed, allowing for more nails in the magazine but slightly reduced holding power. Some building codes may require round head nails, so check local regulations before choosing.

When selecting coil nails, also ensure they are compatible with your framing nailer. Check the manufacturer's guidelines for the appropriate nail specifications and collation type (angled or straight).
